Galvin Cafe a Vin

Cheese and wine tasting event

I've been into cheese since last year after tasting some amazing tastes from Marcus Wareing's cheese board, supplied by one of the top London cheesemongers, La Fromagerie. It really opened up my eyes on how cheese has such a diversity of flavours. And since then, I've developed a strong interest in fine cheese. So when I discovered Galvin Cafe a Vin was hosting a cheese and wine tasting event I booked right away without hesitation.
cheese!
wine!

The cheese on the evening was supplied by Androuet, which is just around the corner of Galvin a Vin. Basically, Androuet selected five different cheeses and Andera, the head wine sommelier from Galvin la Chapelle picked five different wines to pair with the cheeses. I am no cheese or wine expert but I found the the first wine (cider) was outstanding, 2011 Poire Granite from Normandie. The crispness and freshness from the pear cider was such a summer delight. The forth cheese, Oxford Isis, is my favourite style of cheese, washed rind to leave a beautiful rich and creamy flavour. But the combination of the evening was the blue cheese from Pyrenees Atlantiques with a 2012 Nero from Sicily. The wine matched the cheese perfectly and really complemented both in taste and textures.
Chaource, Burgundy with 2011 Poire Granite
Oxford Isis with NV Maderia Barbeito
Bleu des Basques with
2012 Nero d' Avola

I really enjoyed this tasting event, as it definitely helped me understand a bit more about the different styles of cheeses as well as the basic information on matching cheese and wine. Service as expected was top class through the whole evening, with all the wine and champagne pretty much on an unlimited refill level. Hats off to Galvin again to pull off such a wonderful event.

*Keep an eye on Galvin restaurants' website, they regularly host some very interesting events.
