El Dorado Rum

The Lost City of Gold

I am a rum geek, every time when I go to a bar I always order a rum based cocktail and buy at least a bottle or two on my travels. I knew nothing about rum 4 years ago, like most people, thanks to the infamous Bacardi, I always thought rum was just a nasty spirit that you downed at parties. But one day I discovered El Dorado at Rumfest and everything changed from there. El Dorado came from Guyana and is the only remaining distillery in the region, it sources its sugar cane from local producers before being distilled using both column and pot still then aged in American oak barrels, resulting in some of the finest rum in the world.

At London Cocktail Week, I revisited my personal favourite rum brand with a double header, first it was the rum and food matching evening at Tiki Bar Trailer Happiness in Notting Hill. Global brand ambassador Stef introduce us to a range of aged rums from 8 to 21 years old, while personally I am very familiar with the rums, it was my first time trying it with food pairing and it gave me a whole new experience with El Dorado, we tried the cheeses, cured meat and chocolate, all three changed the taste profile of those rums dramatically with the characteristic of whisky, coganc and sherry notes appearing within the rum.

Up next I visited the Seven Dials pop up bar: 'The Lost City of Gold', El Dorado teamed up with Twist London to provide one of the most spectacular looking pop up bars in London Cocktail week with its South American rainforest and heritage theme. The pop up bar offered tasting flights, food matching and master classes as well as some well carefully thought out cocktails, mostly classic with a creative twist that enhanced the delicate flavour of the rums such as the pineapple pepper daiquiri.

The beauty about the El Dorado ranges are there are something for every occasion, from the white 3 years old which make an excellent mojito, the 8 years old which is a beautiful sipper as well as in a short cocktail, the 12 years old acts as the perfect company with cigars to the luxurious 21 years old which is the ultimate sipper as an after dinner treat. El Dorado offers a unique range of fine aged rums and represents the flavours and culture of the country of Guyana, truly one of the best rums in the world.
