Spring Deer

Classic Beijing cuisine

Spring Deer, Hong Kong

Spring Deer is an old fashion Chinese restaurant that champions Beijing cuisine in Hong Kong, I am a massive fan of its cuisine, its richness and powerful flavours are something that is not easy to find in London so when I visited Hong Kong, dining at the Spring Deer was high on my agenda. It is a restaurant you can book in advance in Hong Kong, but due to its popularity and holiday seasons, it was fully booked for the next three weeks, but somehow I managed to get a table in the end after agreeing to dine at late hours.

steamed Chinese ham in honey
deep fried spiced pork hocks
peking style grilled mutton

Steamed Chinese ham was an outstanding starter, the sweet honey sauce glazing on top of a real quality chuck of moist ham with pineapple at the bottom, proved to be a great combination. The sweet and sour croker was a dish full of delightful tastes, the soft and smooth croker was deep fried and filleted in a bed of vegetables along with the sweet and sour sauce which was well balanced. The showstopper Peking duck was as good as you can get in Hong Kong, it had crispy skin that was blessed with spices and sweetness, the plum sauce was totally not required as the duck managed to hold up on its own due to its robust flavours.

Overall, it was a very good dinner, I managed to taste some very classical Beijing flavours at a very affordable price. Service, to much of my surprise was great, our waiter was really kind and helpful at suggesting dishes, full of knowledge, friendly and she really took great care of us, which is a rarity in Hong Kong, especially in traditional restaurants! Spring Deer was very enjoyable and a must visit place for any Beijing food lovers that are visiting Hong Kong.
