L'Autre Pied

Unique quality

L'Autre Pied, photo from management

My 5th visit to one of my all time favourite restaurants in London, this Michelin starred restaurant in Marylebone has been delighting local as well as destination diners for many years. Head chef Andy McFadden is now part owner of L'Autre Pied having gained shares of the restaurant from restauranteur David Moore. So what is so special about Andy's cooking? Well it is just simply unique, light and fresh with refined textures that really stood out, this is the kind of cooking I just absolutely adore.

canapes
onion and olive brioches

This time I went for the 9 course tasting menu, we started off with some very exciting canapes, the foie gras canapes had such a fun texture, starting off with a creamy taste then disappearing in a flash that left you wanting more. And how can we forget the bread, the onion and olive brioches were just a pure delight, not too oily but still packed with crispiness and savoury tastes.

hand dived scallops, picked cucumber, rocket
flamed grilled mackerel with horseradish milk
celeriac, black garlicm onion

First came was the ceviche of hand dived scallops, that natural sweetness that slowly melts in your mouth was just heavenly, the pickled cucumber and rocket added a lovely hint of bitterness and peppery taste to the palate and it was truly sensational. Flamed grilled mackerel has somewhat become a signature dish at L'Autre Pied lately and rightly so, the seasoning of the fish was just perfect, the saltness of the miso and crispness of the apple tapioca added great harmony and it really was just as good as the famous flamed grilled mackerel at The Ledbury.

Poached cod, ruby grapefruit, brassicas
Fallow deer, smoked bacon, pear

The in season Fallow deer tasted as good as it looked, the meat was so moist and no trace of bitterness whatsoever which you would normally find in game meat, however the cannelloni I found was a touch too heavy with its seasoning and it was very salty. Out of the trio of desserts, I really enjoyed the rhubarb texture, the sourness was just perfect with the coolness of the sorbet in the mix, it really acted as a palate freshener to finish off such a remarkable meal.

All in all it was a wonderful evening at L'Autre Pied, in my view, the cooking was beyond most other 1 Michelin restaurants in London and some dishes can rival some 2 stars restaurants such as Sketch and Dinner. I have yet to discover anyone in London who cooks such a style of food and I am please Andy has developed a uniqueness in his cooking and I will be very keen to keep a close eye to see how he will progress in the next few years.
