Hoppers

Soho Srilankan

Egg hopper with fish kari

I was a big fan of the famous Udon joint Koya on Frith Street, so it was a sad day when it was closed down in the summer after the head chef decided to return back to Japan. The site has since been transformed into a Srilankan restaurant, operated by the JKS group (Trishna, Bao, Bubbledogs). Personally I think it is great move from a business prospective, as Srilankan as a cuisine that is seriously under rated. With the group's experience in restaurant management, there is good chance that they can kick off a Srilankan food trend with Hoppers.

Hot Butter Devilled Shrimps
Duck roti

Hot Butter Devilled Shrimps was a powerful but challenging dish, very spicy but with a lovely richness and sharpness to it, I just wished I had a bowl of rice served with it, as the sauces was truly wonderful.
I was not overly keen with the duck roti, the minced duck inside the roti was dry and lacked seasoning. Egg hopper with fish kari was fairly decent as the hopper was light and crispy while the kari delivered a good balance of spicy and sweet flavours, however the egg yolk was almost completely cooked when it arrived on our table.

Lamb Kothu Roti

Hoppers is an interesting one for me, if you like bold flavours and spicy food, Hoppers is a great alternative to your usual Indian food. Bear in mind it is an extremely popular restaurant right now, you would be expecting to wait over an hour in weekends to have a meal that would mostly likely last only an hour as the food comes really quick (All of our dishes came within 10 mins). It is also a no booking restaurant so my advice is come early in mid weeks.
